I've knit with nettle and, while it was a little harsh, it was not painful....I'm just not certain how close it is to jute in texture.

I have macrame'd with jute...and it did not bother my hands at all...used to make plant hangers and decorations

I have also macramed with it and agree it wasn't too hard but think it might be for knitting! Don't think I would like to try it.
