I found this crocheted pattern on another website. I haven't tried it yet, but everyone was raving about it.

Crocheted Cotton Dish Sponges

tfl=through the front loop
tbl=through the back loop

Chain 18
Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each chain across, turn. (17 sc)

Round 1
Ch 2, hdc tfl of each sc across, turn work and continue back around placing a hdc in each of remaining loops on other side of the same sc sts you just completed placing hdc tfl in, sl st in first hdc to join round (34 hdc)

Round 2-6
Ch 2, hdc tbl of each hdc around, sl st in first hdc to join round.

Create Row - Chain 1, sc tbl of both thicknesses of hdc sts, turn work.
Last Row - Sl st in each sc across, fasten off.

Weave in ends, pulling tails into the middle of dish sponge for easy "hiding".

I'm reading through this and will have to get my 'How to Crochet" booklet out because I can 'see' that you should end up with a very dense item here which might very well feel like a sponge.

Oh, how I wish I could crochet. I might just play around with it and see what I come up with.

I was talking to my daughter tonight who can't get enough of my dishcloths. She said to me that one of the dishcloths I gave her works better. She told me that the border of one of them really scrubs things (like crayon off the walls Very Happy ), but commented it was just the sides of it that worked that way. Then I realized why. That one particular one I crocheted a border around it. So I guess as a sponge, it can also be a scrubby.

I made a couple of these crocheted sponges. They only take about 20 min. to make and I love them.
