I started a pair of socks from the Toe-Up Socks for Everybody book by Wendy Knits. When I started the lace pattern though I ran into trouble. I started out with the 33 stitches needed on each needle.

First Row of Lace Pattern
Purl, Purl, K2TOG, YO, Purl,Purl, Knit,Knit,Knit,Purl, Purl, Knit,Knit, Knit, K2TOG, Knit, Knit, YO, Purl, YO, Knit, Knit, ,SSK , Knit, Knit, Knit, Purl, Purl, Knit, Knit, Knit, Purl, Purl, YO, SSK, Purl, Purl

I am ending up 3 stitches short somehow. I thought I'd lost my place and frogged but had the same thing happen again. The K2TOGs and SSKs are taking up my "extra" stitches it seems. (When I count my stitches on the needle I still have 33 like I'm supposed to so I haven't dropped any)

edited because I was looking at the wrong chart this morning. Should read as the following:

purl, k2tog, yo, purl, knit, knit, knit, kurl, purl, knit, knit, knit, k2tog, knit, knit, yo, purl, yo,knit, knit, ssk, knit, knit, knit, purl, purl, knit, knit, knit, purl, yo, ssk, purl

When I count that first row.. there are 37 stitches..

The row does have the increases to compensate for the decreases..

Have you checked for errata on that book? I have another Wendy Knits book that did have an error in the basic gusset heel pattern...

Me too. Seems like an error in the pattern.

If yours is not here, contact Wendy and see if she can help you understand what "you are doing wrong".

Sorry for your frustration. Sad

The SSKs and K2TOGs are done the same as they would be done on a flat project, wouldn't they? Shouldn't the pattern account for those stitches being used in the SSK and K2TOG?

Yes, they're done the same...

They're accounted for in that you have yarn overs that compensate for the increases...

Did you start with 33 sts?

yeah, I start with 33 and by the time I get to the end of the first row of the lace pattern I am 3 sts short finishing the pattern. The YOs compensate for the SSKs and K2TOGs for the next row of the pattern, I still have 33 sts. I just don't have enough it seems to finish the pattern's first row. What could I be doing wrong???

I come out right... I start with 33 sts. and I end with 33 sts. I did the row twice to make sure... I can't tell you anything else without looking at your work...

I'm going to cast on 33 sts and play with it this evening. It has to be something I'm doing. In the meantime I am going to knit a pair of plain socks using some self striping yarn I have.

Thanks for your help!
